Feast Day 2018

By

FAMILY

On the 28th of October 2018, parishioners, family and friends came together to celebrate the Feast Day of Saint John Paul II at the new parish grounds in Rispark.

The event afforded many of our parishioners an opportunity to see our land and proposed church site for the first time. Of course, it also allowed an important platform for the parish to commence the fundraising activities needed to raise funding for our new church.”

The auspicious occasion opened with Holy Mass which was celebrated under a huge tent that was erected for the day. With summer fully announcing itself with the hottest day of the season so far, the tent provided great relief from the blazing heat. During the homily, Fr Deneys spoke about St John Paul II, which included some very interesting insights into the great Pope’s life.

FOOD

There was a fantastic selection of food available, with cuisines representing a number of countries from around the world on sale: Traditional Italian antipasto and gelato ice cream (a real winner on the day due to the temperatures outside!), Chinese options to rival the very streets of Hong Kong – dim sum, chow mein and prawn crackers; and of course, a favourite at any Catholic feast day celebrated in and around Johannesburg – the Portuguese selection – Traditional dobrado (tripe), prego rolls, espetada and flame-grilled Portuguese chicken.

With bellies filled and thirsts quenched, everyone could sit down, relax and enjoy some entertainment with a “Parish has got talent”. Parishioners from (so cute) tots to adults took to the stage displaying their many talents – dancing, playing various musical instruments and singing. There was also a full band playing some great tunes! Children were kept busy on the jumping castle or by playing the fun games provided.

FRIENDSHIP

As the sun went down, the day drew to a close with many parishioners and attendees still hanging around to enjoy the strong bonds of friendship and family which are so well represented within the parish.

Thanks must be given to all who helped out at the Feast Day to ensure it was a resounding success. A special mention must be given to Adelia Rabim and her committee for the monumental effort in organizing the event!

We thank everyone for their participation on the day and we look forward to celebrating next year!
